Memory of Water and the City
A youth initiative that reconnects young people with Hama by exploring its heritage: its norias, neighbourhoods, crafts and the stories of its people, so that heritage is seen as a living part of the city's identity and present.
About the initiative
The Orontes flows through Hama and the noria turns, as if telling a story not everyone can hear.
In Hama, heritage does not live in landmarks alone. It lives in the old souks, the bridges, the houses and crafts, the music, and in the details we see every day… until we no longer notice them.
For young people to discover their city… means reading its memory anew, finding a part of their own identity in its stories and places, and letting the past become a living extension of the present.
That is when heritage becomes a space for dialogue and participation.
Our vision
We believe heritage is not merely the past, but a space that brings people together around a shared memory, strengthens dialogue between generations, and helps build social cohesion through participation and the making of a shared memory.
Our tracks
Documenting the norias
Documenting Hama's norias through field visits that gather their history, photos and stories, turning them into knowledge, visual content and a digital platform that lets everyone discover this legacy.
Heritage stories
A space that brings back Hama's memory through stories, photos, crafts and places, and gives young people room to present heritage in creative ways that keep it alive in minds and in daily life.
Community advocacy
A track that brings together young people, volunteer teams, experts and local bodies to talk about the state of heritage in Hama, set its priorities, and turn ideas into community initiatives and activities that strengthen participation in protecting it.
A journey that begins with the waters of the Orontes and reaches the city's history; from the city's memory… to the participation of its youth.
